KIDS WE HAVE HELPED

We were asked to share a brief story of one of the 1,200 youth referred to us.  Two years ago, a local high school student named John was referred to us after he had posted a picture of himself on his MySpace page with a shotgun pointed to his head and with text reflecting suicidal thinking posted under the picture.  Further investigation revealed that he felt socially isolated at school because of his physical handicap and that he was not adequately cared for at home because his parents were struggling with medical issues of their own.  His grades were falling.

Working through many of these issues over the course of 20 therapy sessions, John made significant improvements.  Although his physical handicap will never go away, though his course of counseling, he began cultivating many friendships, took care of his appearance,no longer struggled with suicidal thinking, and attended a leadership course paid for by a Second Wind Fund benefactor.  Following the leadership course, John went on to apply for college and was accepted at a major university.
